- | I'll take a well-designed modem based on the Rockwell v.34 datapump (ie.
- | Cardinal MVP288I) over a USR Sportster any day. I bought the new
- | Sportster 33.6k over the weekend and ran into problems right away.
- [ problems not related to function deleted ]
- | Now to the major problems. The
- | Sportster cannot successfully answer an incoming call from a Cardinal
- | MVP288I set to MNP error correction/no compression. Even worse, I got a
- | throughput of only 2500 to 2700 cps max to my ISP and local BBS' that I
- | got 3200-3400 cps with the old Cardinal. The Sportster reports a high
- | connect rate (ie. 28800/31200), but the throughput is slow (ATI6 still
- | shows a 28800/31200 connection after I hang up). I then made a local
- | call from line 1 to line 2 in my house to verify the throughput problem
- | as this provides a best case line condition. Cardinal to Cardinal I
- | consistently got 3400 cps. When I put the Sportster on one end the
- | throughput would hover between 2500 and 2700 cps.
-
- That sounds like a setup problem, what initialization string did you use?
-
- | I asked if him if this was the best I could expect from my
- | Sportster for the time being and he replied "Yes". I returned it the
- | following day.
-
- Sounds like you didn't spend much/any time reading the manual and
- trying things, or didn't mention it if you did. I can think of
- several things which might cause this, but won't go into them since
- you have a slower modem which you are able to make work.
- |
- | You're probably curious why I got a Sportster instead of another Cardinal.
- | Simply, I was tempted by the faster speeds available with v.34+. I bought
- | the Cardinal after reading what people have to say about it here on
- | comp.dcom.modems and I feel confident to recommend it to others. With
- | the Cardinal, you do get a lot without paying more.
-
- My results with Cardinal and Zoom have been mixed, and I think I've
- seen a number of people who have the same experience. Since USR
- outsells all the others, it's not too odd to see more USR
- complaints, since happy people never seem to post (except John
- Navias who is terminally ecstatic with USR).
